It is the middle of May in Vadodara. The outside temperature is pushing 45°C. You turn on your split AC, hear the familiar beep, feel the air blowing from the vents… but 15 minutes later, the room is still suffocatingly hot. The air coming out is barely room temperature.
An air conditioner that runs but refuses to cool is the most commonāand most frustratingāHVAC emergency we handle at Atlas Aircon. Before you panic and assume you need to buy a brand new unit, take a breath. In our 20+ years of engineering experience across Gujarat, we have found that 90% of these cooling failures boil down to five specific technical faults.
Here is the official Atlas Aircon troubleshooting guide to help you understand exactly why your AC has stopped blowing cold air, and what needs to be done to restore your comfort.
The 60-Second DIY Check (Do This First!)
Before calling an engineer, grab your remote. Ensure the mode is set to “Cool” (Snowflake icon) and not “Fan” or “Dry” (Water drop icon). Next, check if your remote temperature is set lower than the current room temperature (try setting it to 18°C). Finally, ensure all windows and doors are firmly shut. If it still isn’t cooling, proceed to the technical faults below.
1 Refrigerant (Gas) Leakage
Your AC does not “consume” gas like a car consumes petrol. The refrigerant (like R32 or R410a) runs in a closed, pressurized copper loop. If your AC is low on gas, it absolutely means there is a microscopic hole or crack in the copper piping.
The Symptoms: The AC blows slightly cool or room-temperature air. You might see ice building up on the copper pipes connected to the outdoor unit, or hear a faint hissing sound.
The Fix: Never let a mechanic simply “top up” the gas. The new gas will just leak out again in a few weeks. At Atlas Aircon, we first pressurize the system with dry nitrogen to locate the micro-leak. We braze (weld) the hole shut, pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture, and then recharge the gas by exact weight using digital scales.
2 Severely Choked Condenser Coils
The outdoor unit (condenser) has one job: to release the heat it absorbed from inside your room into the outside air. In dusty areas like Makarpura GIDC or near heavy traffic zones in Vadodara, the aluminum fins on the outdoor unit quickly become choked with mud, leaves, and industrial grime.
The Symptoms: The outdoor unit feels excessively hot to the touch. The compressor runs for 10 minutes, overheats, and automatically trips (shuts off) to protect itself, leaving only the indoor fan running.
The Fix: A standard bucket-and-brush cleaning will not work. Your system requires a 120-Bar Power Jet Chemical Wash to blast the hardened grime out from deep inside the condenser fins, restoring proper heat exchange.
3 A Blown Start/Run Capacitor
The compressor inside your outdoor unit is a heavy, power-hungry motor. It requires a massive jolt of electricity to start upāfar more than your standard wall socket can provide. The “Capacitor” acts like a giant battery that stores electricity to kick-start the compressor. Thanks to frequent MGVCL voltage fluctuations in Gujarat, these capacitors often swell and burst.
The Symptoms: The indoor unit works perfectly, but the outdoor unit makes a low “humming” or “clicking” sound and the fan might spin, but the heavy compressor never kicks on. No compressor = no cooling.
The Fix: This is a rapid, inexpensive fix. An Atlas Aircon engineer will test the microfarads (µF) of the capacitor using a multimeter. If itās dead, we simply swap it out with a fresh, heavy-duty OEM capacitor, and your AC will instantly start blowing ice-cold air again.
4 Clogged Indoor Air Filters & Evaporator
If the air inside your room cannot physically reach the cold coils inside the AC, it cannot be cooled. When was the last time you checked the mesh filters hidden under the front plastic flap of your indoor unit?
The Symptoms: The air coming out of the AC is cold, but the airflow is incredibly weak. You cannot feel the breeze unless you stand directly underneath the AC. You may also notice water dripping down your wall.
The Fix: You can pull out the plastic mesh filters yourself and wash them under a tap. However, if the dust has bypassed the filters and formed a thick layer of bio-slime on the metal cooling coils behind them, you will need our technicians to perform an indoor deep-cleaning service to restore the CFM (Airflow Volume).
5 Fried Inverter PCB (Circuit Board)
Modern 5-star Inverter ACs (like Daikin, LG, and Samsung) are essentially giant computers. They rely on complex Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) to control the compressor speed. A sudden power surge or a short circuit caused by a house lizard getting inside the outdoor unit can easily fry these delicate microprocessors.
The Symptoms: The AC might turn on for a few seconds and then completely shut down, flashing a blinking light or an Error Code (like E1, CH38, or U4) on the digital display.
The Fix: Unauthorized mechanics will tell you to throw away the whole board and spend ā¹8,000+ on a new one. Atlas Aircon operates an advanced PCB diagnostic hub. In many cases, our engineers can perform micro-soldering to replace the specific burnt IC chip on your existing board at a fraction of the cost.
Stop Sweating. Start Cooling.
Don’t let a generic mechanic guess what’s wrong with your AC. Atlas Aircon engineers carry digital manifold gauges, multimeters, and vacuum pumps to accurately diagnose and fix your cooling failure on the first visit.
